LETTER AS SUBMITTED TO THE INDEPENDENT
Dear Editor,
The recent tragic death of several cyclists on an outing in Wales is reported to
have been caused by a car skidding on ice. But the more basic reason these
people died is that 'soft' travellers like cyclists and pedestrians are so often
forced to share the same road space as 'hard' things like cars, lorries and
buses, travelling at much higher speeds.
We badly need a national network of traffic-free routes for cyclists and
pedestrians. A small part of the current road budget could greatly accelerate
the excellent work already being done by the Sustrans charity, building that
network. Many more people could then, safely, enjoy the pleasure of travelling
under their own 'steam', gaining fitness, fighting flab, and helping to combat
the dangers of climate change.
Sincerely,
Gerry Wolff
