TWO BRILLIANT IDEAS

Weaning us off our addiction to fossil fuels is not going to be easy. However, some very interesting proposals have been made in recent years which promise to cut through many of the social, political and ethical complexities:

• At the international level, the concept of Contraction and Convergence is winning widespread support and has much to recommend it.
• At the level of individual people or individual businesses, some form of personal and tradeable carbon rationing or system of Personal Carbon Allowances seems to be essential.
